Vaas retired from Test cricket after the Pakistan series, but was ignored for the one-dayers despite insisting he would play limited-overs cricket till the 2011 World Cup.

Muralitharan has taken more Test (770) and one-day (505) wickets than any other bowler, will lend experience to the hosts' bowling attack in the absence of veteran seamer Chaminda Vaas.

Middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera returns to the one-day arena after four years, but dashing Tillakaratne Dilshan will miss the series after sustaining finger and eye injuries during the third Test.

Upul Tharanga is expected to open the innings with veteran Sanath Jayasuriya.

The rivals will also play a Twenty20 international in Colombo on August 12 after the one-dayers end.But Younus is confident a change in personnel and infusion of new blood for the five one-day matches will revive the tourists and provide entertaining cricket for fans.

Sri Lanka now meet Pakistan for a 5-match ODI series at Dambulla. The home side, Sri Lanka will be riding high on confidence after capturing the Test series 2-0 and that too without their premium spin bowler Muralidaran.

The ODI squad for the home side looks much stronger now with the comeback of the big guns in Sanath Jayasuriya, Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan. Skipper Kumar Sangakkara has led the side well along with his ex Mahela Jayawardena.

Test series depended quite a lot on the seamers in Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara who bowled superbly throughout the series. Much will depend on them once again if they are to put up the same sort of performance in the shorter version of the game as well.

The visitors, Pakistan on the other hand though losing the series quite poorly, have some sort of momentum by their side as they did showcased a fighting performance in the last Test.

They have made some serious changes in their side after they re-recruited the ICL players in fast bowler Naved-ul-Hasan and opener Imran Nazir back to the National Squad. They had earlier brought back Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq for the Test Series.

Umar Akmal, younger brother to wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal also gets a look-in in the 16-member squad on the back of some solid performances in the domestic circuit.

Shahid Afridi who has been recently handed the leadership for the Pakistan T20 internationals gets back in the ODI scheme of things as well. There are quite a few things to look out for in this game as Jayawardena plays his 300th ODI while Kamran Akmal his 100th.

Akmal also needs 82 to complete 2000 ODI runs in his career. Razzaq needs 4 to capture 250 ODI wickets while Naved-ul-Hasan needs 5 to capture 100 ODI wickets.

Sri Lanka won the 1st test dramatically from the mouth of defeat as their bowlers took 8 wickets for just 46 runs on the 4th day. Watch Sri Lanka vs Pakistan 2nd Test Live Streaming

Sri Lanka can wrap-up the three-Test series against Pakistan in Colombo, but they will have to do so without Muttiah Muralitharan.

The world’s leading Test and one-day bowler has failed to recover from the knee injury that ruled him out of the enthralling first Test in Galle.

Sri Lanka team manager Brendon Kuruppu confirmed Murali had improved considerably but will sit out the second Test on his home ground as a precautionary measure.

“He won’t be playing the Test, but that’s more as a precaution than anything else,” Kuruppu said. “We are confident Murali will play the third Test.”

Sri Lanka were gifted the opportunity to secure the series 2-0 after Pakistan, chasing a modest target of 168 runs to win, collapsed from a comfortable 71-2 to 117 all out, losing their last eight wickets for 46 runs.

Ironically, Sri Lanka’s hero was left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who was flown in from England where he was playing league cricket two days before the Test to replace Muralitharan.

Rubens Barrichello enjoyed a better session in seventh, with Kazuki Nakajima of Williams sandwiched between Renault duo Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jr behind the Brawn GP driver.

Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen were 12th and 16th for Ferrari, while bottom was Giancarlo Fisichella, who spun his Force India into the barriers after only three timed laps as the track became wet.

Reigning champion Hamilton clocked one minute, 32.149 seconds with only seven minutes left in the session to take over from home favourite Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.

We have had some wet races and we have not had much in the way of cars that are out of position on the grid and things like that. But actually I was having a look at this very subject the week before last, well, straight after Silverstone. I think that, as I put things together, I could see that give or take a little bit we had achieved a fair bit of what we set out to do.

I think that there is no doubt that the cars can follow a little bit closer. Statistically, if you analyse the races that are worth analysing this year there has been a little bit more overtaking. I think we probably didn’t go as far as we wished or wanted to. We were setting out to try and halve the time difference needed to produce a successful overtake and maybe we haven’t quite got that far. But equally I think – and I don’t know whether Paddy would agree with me – I think we set a very low target for the downforce knowing that once the teams got working on it 24/7 they would rapidly bring that downforce up but I have to say it went up a little bit further than I expected it to which is not condusive to overtaking amongst other things.

Yeah, I agree with Pat. We always need the level of downforce. It was important as obviously that affects the weight more significantly than anything else and the fact that the downforce that has been achieved by the cars this year is significantly higher than anticipated means inevitably that some of the work we did has been eroded in effect.

I think the other factor that is worth bearing in mind, which is quite fundamental, is that as Formula One has become, I would say, more thoroughly professional from end to end and better resourced from end to end on the grid the performances have closed up, so in actual fact the spread of lap time performance from end to end of the grid is about half what it was five years ago. Now if all the cars are that much closer it just means they will always find it more difficult to overtake, so it is quite a difficult problem to crack.

The home side, England, has a new Ashes captain in Andrew Strauss and two match-winners in Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff. whereas none of the current Australia's fast bowlers have played a test in England .

In a total of 300 Ashes Tests Australia has won in 121 whereas England has won 95.

On the rankings front this is a battle between the No. 1 and No. 5 reams, but for Australia and England it is much more than that. Australia must win this series to keep the No. 1 ICC Test rating.

England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Graham Onions.

Australia (possible) 1 Simon Katich, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Stuart Clark, 11 Peter Siddle.

Pitch and conditions

Ricky Ponting expects the pitch to have some moisture at the begining, providing "slow-ish seam and trampoline" bounce, but he believes it will change.

England Captain, Andrew Strauss, said it looked like a good pitch, but one that would not offer much pace or bounce. "There will be a little bit in it for everyone," he said, "and that's the sort of wicket we were hoping to see."

The weather has been a bit unpredictable at Cardiff, with rain and sun fighting for attention and more wet conditions are predicted for the end of the week.

A very big factor that I am not sure has been covered is the need for experience. Some of the form players such as Hughes no doubt will be important but I think people under estimate how important experience is when it comes to an Ashes test.

Hughes, Johnson and Haddin have showed that they are stars of the game but it would be nice to have Hayden, Gilchrist and McGrath. This is why selectors will find a spot for Lee and maybe even Symonds.

Watson is one of the most talented cricketers running (or hobbling) around but question marks have been raised over his heart and mental capacity. North was a form player in 08/09 domestically but many players have one good season, can he back it up? McDonald is playing above his level in Test cricket.

Side

Hughes
Katich
Ponting
Clarke (needs to step up to four)
Hussey (may loose his spot to North if he doesnt make runs)
Symonds
Haddin
Watson/Siddle
Johnson
Lee
Clark

Hauritz 12th unless dust bowl and then will replace Watson or Siddle depending on form.

The addition of Symonds adds experience and takes the pressure off watson bowling too many overs as he bowls handy mediums (swung the ball sideways in shielfd final as well so may be handy).

Batting depth is outstanding and may be required with Hussey and Ponting not scoring at expected rates recently.

Wimbledon Federer Great Record win

Roger Federer won a record 15th Grand Slam after beating sixth seed Andy Roddick in an epic fifth set 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 in the Wimbledon men's final.

Federer's victory was all the more incredible for the fact that he recovered from one set down, and trailed 6-2 in a second set tie-break before he won the next two sets to seize control of a scintillating encounter on Centre Court.

Roddick refused to be denied, and the American fought back against the world number two with ferocious intensity, and clinched the fourth set 6-3 with real conviction.

The fifth set was a positive barrage of aces from the rackets of both players but finally, serving to stay in the match for the 11th time, Roddick was broken as Federer sealed a monumental win.

At 27 years old, Federer has now overhauled Pete Sampras's incredible tally of 14 titles, among which he can count six Wimbledon crowns to surpass Bjorn Borg and Lawrence Doherty's five.

For Roddick, it was a third defeat to the Swiss in finals at the All England Club to follow similar results in 2004 and 2005, and to compound the American's frustration, his nemesis now holds a staggering 19-2 career advantage over him.

Last year it took Cavendish five stages to put his mark on the Tour; this year the 24-year-old has done so at the first occasion possible.

With five Tour victories to his name - and now a maiden green jersey - Cav will probably overtake Barry Hoban's British record of eight wins by the end of the week.

His detractors will still complain about his withdrawal from last year's race; they will slate his no-show in Saturday's prologue (in which he finished fourth-last); they will say he can only deliver when it's set up for him on a plate.

But cycling has always been about teamwork - and trains have been central to the careers of top sprinters for years now: ask Mario Cipollini or Alessandro Petacchi.

Columbia rode a perfect finale on Sunday. They were the sole team with nine men working to reel in the breakaway. Tony Martin brought Cav to 1km to go before passing the baton to Big George Hincapie and then, finally, Mark Renshaw - engines whom Cav rightly calls "the best in the business".

Cavendish wasn't lucky to avoid the crash on the final bend. He was unaffected because his team were already so far ahead.
