The Armenian Football Association was founded in 1992 and obtained FIFA membership in the same year.
This Eastern European nation have competed internationally ever since but have yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship finals. Armenia first attempted to reach football's biggest stage in the run-up to France 1998, finishing fourth in their group ahead of Northern Ireland and Albania. Victory against Albania and five draws earned them eight points despite suffering two heavy defeats against eventual group winners Germany; losing 1-5 at home and 0-4 in Germany.
Armenia finished last in their 2002 FIFA World Cup Japan/Korea qualifying group, while for Germany 2006, they only managed two wins in 12 matches.
Bosnia-Herzegovina fell just short in their third attempt to reach the final phase of a FIFA World Cup, finishing third in their Group 7 qualifying campaign for Germany 2006. Nevertheless, this was the best showing in Bosnia's short history as they racked up four wins and four draws with only two defeats in a group dominated by Serbia and Montenegro.
Even Spain had to be content with a play-off spot. Bosnia played particularly well against the top teams, twice holding Spain and going down narrowly 1-0 away to Serbia and Montenegro as well as managing to draw with them at home.
