Russia rejoined FIFA as an independent nation in 1992 and competed at the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA two years later. Famously, Oleg Salenko fired five goals against Cameroon to set a tournament record which stands to this day. However, the Russians failed to qualify for the 1998 and 2006 tournaments and disappointed at Korea/Japan 2002. A long time has passed since the golden era of the 1950s and 1960s.
when powerful USSR teams were built around goalkeeping legend Lev Yashin, one of the game's all-time greats. UEFA EURO 2004 in Portugal was another disappointment, as they became the first side to be eliminated from the tournament. However, they were the only team to defeat eventual champions Greece.
Liechtenstein have fielded an official national football team since 1982, and while their victories have been very few and far between there have been some memorable performances in recent times. In the run-up to Germany 2006, they posted their best record in the qualifying campaign of an international competition with two wins and two draws from 12 matches.
It took a late goal from Nuno Gomes to deny them a draw in Portugal against the group winners. They held the same team to a draw at home, likewise second-placed Slovakia, and lost 2-1 to Russia on their own soil. Their two victories came at Luxembourg's expense and their 4-0 away win ranks as the greatest margin of victory by Liechtenstein to date in international football.
